Birdeatsbaby

Alternative Rock

abouttheband

Alt-classical prog-punk act Birdeatsbaby are an unusual four-piece that hail from Brighton, UK. Not really fitting into any current musical trends, the band steer towards a ‘dark cabaret’ rock sound, with fast-paced and complex drums, piano, bass and violin all tied up with huge and catchy choruses. Like a more hyper-active Nick Cave meets a slightly depressed Freddie Mercury, Birdeatsbaby have been described as many things, including ‘a distinctly unhinged brand of burlesque freak-pop’, and ‘Twin Peaks on snuff.’

The band first made their mark on the music scene with their infamous ‘The Trouble’ music video which has since received over 80,000 views since it was aired. Since then they have released their critically acclaimed debut album Here She Comes-a-Tumblin’ in 2009 and the cathartic follow up, Bigger Teeth EP (produced by Marc R Norris of 80s Matchbox B-line Disaster) in 2010.

The band have toured extensively in the UK, Europe and America, playing with other such musical oddities as The World Inferno Friendship Society, Thomas Truax and most recently worked with prestigious producer, Jason Rubal on their latest album Feast of Hammers which is due for release in early 2012.

If you’re looking for something dark, nasty and completely original, Birdeatsbaby have the potential to be one of those cult bands that only appear once in a lifetime. Let the music speak for itself: www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk

News From The Nest. December06 Dec 2011 09:29 PM
Hello birds! What a hectic month November has been... thought it was time to send out a little newsletter to let you know how things are in bird-land... We kicked off November with a killer gig at the Half Moon, Herne Hill with She Makes War http://shemakeswar.com/index.htm (a fabulous solo artist who will be playing with us at our album launch in February get tickets here... http://www.wegottickets.com/event/143787?). It ended with some fireworks and plenty of jagerbombs. Classic birdeatsbaby style. Later that month we were lucky enough to have a live session on Brighton’s Juice FM with Tony Marks. http://www.facebook.com/tonymarksnewmusicshow You can still listen again to us chatting with Tony and playing a very special version of Rosary with extra double bass and drums here... http://www.mixcloud.com/TonyMarksNewMusicShow/mon-71111-dj-shadow-birdeatsbaby-live/ We've also begun to gig our new single 'Incitatus' which sees us taking an even heavier direction with Garry using distortion for his bass guitar. Apparently this setting = face-melting. Speaking of our new single... we've made a new music video at an incredible location thanks to Polly Harvey - amazing photographer and lady and Ben Wallace who very kindly let us take over their home, studio and lives for a weekend. I sincerely hope they have recovered! Here’s her website... http://polstar-photography.smugmug.com/ The music video for Incitatus will be out in January, please brace yourselves! It is possibly the most ambitious song and video we've ever done. November finished with a show at The George in London (lovely venue) with Rasp Thorne and The Briars http://www.facebook.com/RaspThorneAndTheBriars where we witnessed our first Birdeatsbaby tattoo - AWESOME. We also played the Juice FM showcase in Brighton, you can read a review of the show here... http://brightonmusicblog.wordpress.com/2011/12/01/not-an-ordinary-gig/ Finally, our next (and FINAL) gig of 2011 will be with the incredible Midnight Lycan Party http://www.myspace.com/themidnightlycanparty up in Stoke at The Rigger. http://www.facebook.com/themlp It will be amazing to be reunited with this band after 3 years, we are VERY excited so do come along and see us before the year is out. Details all on facebook. I hope you have a fantastic run-up to Christmas, we'll be in touch soon with more news... Don't forget you can buy tickets for our album launch party in February here... http://www.wegottickets.com/event/143787 Love & Feathers, Birdeatsbaby x

Dearest birds... A lot has been going on in the Nest recently, so I felt it was time to update you on a few things! Our next single 'Feast of Hammers' is now underway... eeeeeeeeee!!! The music video for this will be out in a couple of weeks which is very exciting! You can help promote this and create a buzz around it by having your twitter/facebook status as 'I'm invited to the Feast of Hammers..' in the next few weeks - of course, hashtagging is with #birdeatsbaby or linking it back to our page on facebook would be amazing. THANK YOU :D You can still get our latest single free at BANDCAMP http://birdeatsbaby.bandcamp.com/ if you haven't got it, and please please share it with as many people as you can! We definitely need your help with this :) Last month Keely and Mishkin played a 'fly-by' acoustic set at Bestival. We arrived on the Sunday, played a very special acoustic set and then had to dash back to Brighton in time for the video shoot at 9 in the morning! Big thanks to Rasp Thorne and The Briars http://www.facebook.com/RaspThorneAndTheBriars who offered us the show, we hope to return next year as a full band :D We were also reunited with an old friend and touring buddy, Joe Black. http://www.myspace.com/misterjoeblack Apart from dashing all over the country, we have been rehearsing some more acoustic covers, the next lot of these should be out soon :) Check out our latest one HERE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ss-WYZ_eEk&utm_source Another rumor that's been going around is that Mishkin is creating her own solo record which should be out before Christmas... more news on that HERE! http://www.facebook.com/mishkinfitzgerald Thanks so much for all your support birds, and we hope to see you at a show sometime soon. Right that's enough work for one day... I'm off to the pub. Much Love, Birdeatsbaby x TWITTER http://twitter.com/birdeatsbaby FACEBOOK http://facebook.com/birdeatsbaby

First and foremost, our NEW SINGLE – ‘Through Ten Walls’, is a-coming. The video is out on Monday. That’s like, 7 days so you haven’t got long to wait. This will be the first song off the new record ‘Feast of Hammers’ which we recorded with JASON RUBAL http://jasonrubal.com/rubal.asp back in February. Read more about him and us here. http://www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk/our-new-album-feast-of-hammers-the-story-so-far It is going to be different. And epic. And shiny. Prepare yourselves. So anyway, we’re going to need all the help we can get to put this record out, so please feel free to share, post, blog, talk about us wherever possible! If you think you can help us by blogging, writing, taking pictures, or doing artwork or ANYTHING else, please please please get in touch, we would love to chat to you Next on the list-of-happening-things, we play with the amazing JASON WEBLEY at the end of the month in Brighton at The Green Door Store, 26th Aug. Our New Album 'Feast Of Hammers' the story so far...03 May 2011 07:44 PM
Dearest birds, As you may know, we recently spent some time in the big ole USA. We may have mentioned it a couple of times.... ahem. We’re still absolutely buzzing from the experience, so we thought we’d explain exactly why, and what it means for the future of Birdeatsbaby... We have had most of the songs on our new album for a while but have not really been playing them at shows. This is because we’ve been not-so-quietly plotting something big for quite some time. Last year we had the opportunity to talk with Jason Rubal http://jasonrubal.com/rubal.asp a world-famous producer with a very specific specialty...he is known for making abstract, minimal and dark records. Birdeatsbaby minimal? Not exactly. But we really got along from the start and once we started talking about our music, we realised what similar ideas we had about how our big record should sound. In November of last year Jason (and Roy who works with Jason) flew over to work with us on our arrangements. It was quite a learning experience and gave us a new perspective on how to look at songwriting. Early in 2011 we flew to America to go into production on this record. We played a few shows while we were there, you’ve probably seen the incriminating photos, if not... here they are http://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150117804337825.274952.64375517824&utm_source met some amazing people, and made some great friends along the way. We worked every day for weeks on this record. It was an experience unlike anything we have ever done before. A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and malt liquor went into it.

We have put all of our confidence into this record and are very excited to have this be our biggest, boldest step yet. We could not be more proud. Expect very new, different and exciting things on this record. All we can really say is that is the most artsy and bold album we could push ourselves to make. Wait patiently, it will be out before you know it, then... LET THE MAYHEM COMMENCE...again!

Strippers and Guns... oh, and a new album! God bless America29 Mar 2011 09:40 PM
Dear birds,   It’s about bloody time we blogged about what’s been going on in bird-land…as there has been LOTS happening!   This last month of March (and some of February too) has been the most exciting and amazing time we’ve had as a band so far. In case you haven’t been keeping up with the bird news (now honestly wtf where have you been?), we have been out in America for some time MAKING THE NEW ALBUM. It has been an incredible (and somewhat drunken) experience with the awesome Jason Rubal http://jasonrubal.com/rubal.asp at his beautiful studio, Seventh Wave http://www.facebook.com/SeventhWaveStudio in Harrisburg, PA. We stayed there for 3 weeks, tirelessly working day and night ;) to make this wonderful album for you guys! We’ve decided to call ‘Feast of Hammers’. It won’t be out for a while yet… but we promise you it fucking rocks. Expect amazingness!   Before that we were gallivanting along the East Coast playing shows with This Way To The Egress http://www.thiswaytotheegress.com/site/ and our very own Mister Joe Black. http://www.misterjoeblack.com/ It was incredible. It was emotional. In a good way. We are very grateful to TWTTE for lending us their musical instruments, giving us places to sleep and being so lovely to us. THANK YOU :)   For those of you on the North, South, West Coast and in between states…we are planning to return roughly this time next year for a more extensive tour so please do not be sad we didn’t make it over to you this time for we shall return :)   Right! Rather than rambling through the entire tour/recording we will just name some new life experiences we have gained since being in America: We drove through a snow storm, drank neat Gin, ate $25 steak, adopted a flamingo (and named it Spencer), http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002227088194 partied with a Harvard professor, fired guns, met strippers, consumed several cases of Colt 45 and discovered Hershey’s Sweet Sweet World of Chocolate. Just to name a few. All the good stuff that rock stars should really do! To see em all, go to our facebook page and have a gander through the pics! Expect a video soon too...   Thank you to everyone who helped us along this wonderous journey. We will never forget it. Love, Mishkin, Keely, Garry and Charlie x x x UPCOMING SHOWS 8th April 2011 The Ranelagh Brighton 8pm, FREE http://www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk/tour-dates
Rosary Music Video is Out Now...and we hear America calling19 Feb 2011 09:51 PM
Why hello there beautiful birdies!!! Things are VERY exciting at Nest HQ these days... we're mere days away from flapping our wings across the pond to the big ole land of AMERICA. Playing shows in Montpeiler (VT), Boston, New York and New Jersey is enough to make us jump up and down and go EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Ahem. We will try to contain ourselves till then as I'm in danger of blowing a fuse. On tour we are joined by the wondeful This Way To The Egress http://www.thiswaytotheegress.com/site/ and long time buddy Mister Joe Black http://www.misterjoeblack.com/ (who we toured with previously. and drew on his face as he slept. he may not like us very much) - you can view all the details up here... http://www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk/tour-dates After touring, we go to record our new album with the legendary Jason Rubal. http://www.facebook.com/SeventhWaveStudio Oh yes. This means MORE birdeatsbaby music is on the way!! We will keep you updated on the recording while we're out there so make sure you're on our facebook, twitter and the birdeatsbaby forum. Hopefully we'll have some video diaries up too! http://www.facebook.com/birdeatsbaby http://twitter.com/birdeatsbaby http://www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk/bbpress/ Before we shoot off however, we do have a treat for you... a new music video! Created by the lovely people at Second Mouse Media http://secondmousemedia.com/ big thanks to Dom, Kelly and Tom for this. So, without further ado... we present... ROSARY The video is available here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=romVq9JbdAo See you in America mofos... love, Birdeatsbaby x
Philippa flies the Nest… bon voyage oh awesome drum lady11 Jan 2011 06:30 PM
Dear Birdies, Some of you may know this already but to most I’m sure this comes as a big surprise…. Yes, the rumours are true, Philippa B is leaving the flock to pursue full-time career in film. As I’m sure you all know, she is very talented in this area, having made all our music videos… and some other nifty ones too. See them here... https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&view=js&name=main,tlist&ver=gUoD8dxAgEA.en_GB.&am=!EEj2wTJ_eeX7BT6irnU2WkXpJ1g5rCZaOyNA8A_dETud3ldLk-XFWn8&fri ‘Phil-the-Shirt Bloomers’ has been with us since the very, very beginning, back when it was just Mish (who had a shaved head back then), writing strange songs together in student digs and shyly performing in dives all over Brighton. She has helped create the image of this band, done all our beautiful artwork and photos, as well as tirelessly bashed the drums. She will be missed terribly! However… although this is heart-breaking, it does mean that she now has more time to help us make more music videos, so we will still be seeing her on many Birdeatsbaby photo shoots, videos and general drunken get-togethers! In tribute to her leaving, we’ve selected some of the best (and worst) pictures from her time with us. Enjoy. And cry a little. We did. You can stay in touch with Philippa by checking her website and blog here… http://www.philippabloomfield.com/ We'll miss you Philippa x x x x AKA... Merry Christmas from Le Birds23 Dec 2010 05:41 PM
Ho ho ho birdies! Too cold to go outside? Contemplating braving the snow for a trip to the pub? **** that. Stay in and listen to our newest track 'Lullaby' which we recorded whilst on tour this year... and here's the story behind it: We met Bart, a producer in The Netherlands, who has a lovely studio in Landbouwbelang, Maastricht. He made it himself. It is amazing. Whilst we we on tour this October he very kindly recorded and produced a single for us, entitled 'Lullaby'. It's a dark little country song we wrote the last time we were on tour... and now it is yours. Now for the juicy part.... we are GIVING IT AWAY FOR FREE HERE http://birdeatsbaby.bandcamp.com/track/lullaby Happy Christmas from us! There is an option should you wish to donate - anything you give (and please don't feel obliged to) will go to Crisis at Christmas during the festive season. And please be sure to visit Bart's website, http://www.magnetophon.nl/ and tell him how awesome he is! And check out the LBB where he lives too. http://www.landbouwbelang.com/lbb2/ We would also like to thank YOU, dear birds, for all the support you've given us in 2010, it has been an amazing year. Here are some of our favorite moments... In February we made our third music video, for 'I Always Hang Myself With The Same Rope', if you haven't seen it, WHYYYYYY NOT? Watch it now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2F8ZzjW610 Later in the year we were lucky enough to record with Sir Marc R Norris (warning - this man is not actually a knight, no matter what he tells you) on our latest EP 'Bigger Teeth'. It's available here http://www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk/shop/bigger-teeth-ep At the Secret Garden Party we owned the Feast of Fools stage with our zombie soldier costumes... In November we met up and had pre-production fun with Jason Rubal and Roy Nash. We will be recording with them in Pennsylvania in March 2011 for our new album. Yes, NEW ALBUM. Can I please have a hell yeah? In December we were interviewed by Tom Robinson from 6 Music, and Joel Hajioff from Total Rock Radio, wahey! If anyone has a recording of the TTR interview we would love a copy! (email band@birdeatsbaby.co.uk) Stay tuned for the new year, we have some big news and much more goings on. Catch us first at Joe Black's launch party on the 17th January @ Kings Theatre, Portsmouth. Till then, Happy Holidays! Drink and be merry, we certainly will be! J'adores it. Birdeatsbaby x

Have We Told You How Beautiful You Look Lately...?09 Aug 2010 12:13 PM
Dear Birds, This is just a quick blog to ask (well, beg) for your help! In case you haven’t noticed, there is a little competition going on called BE THE SOURCE. Basically, unsigned artists upload their videos, and then the general public vote for them. The top few get played on Sky TV and Freeview channels during September and the winning band get £10,000 and a record deal!!! Birdeatsbaby have slim chances of winning as the top acts obviously have huge fanbases, BUT, if we win, we promise to donate £1000 of the prize money to the OXFAM PAKISTAN FLOOD APPEAL. The rest of it will go towards album recording next year, flights, PR costs and some new instruments as we are in desperate need of amplifiers, a new drum kit and bass guitar! This is a great opportunity for you to help an unsigned act, and hopefully donate money to charity too… Voting takes precisely 1.38 seconds so please, please, please take the time to do so… and you never know what could happen! To vote, please copy and paste this link into your browser: http://www.bethesource.tv/browse/video/user/423/uvid/84 We have three videos up there, so if you’ve time, vote for all three! If you wish to donate to the Oxfam charity regardless, please click here, http://www.oxfam.org.uk/ There are several rounds to the competition, so we will keep you updated! Thank you in advance for your time and support. It is always appreciated. Love & Feathers, Birdeatsbaby x
